What jaw Botox does

Jaw Botox places a small dose of botulinum toxin into the masseter, the muscle used for chewing. When this muscle is over-developed — for example through teeth grinding or clenching — easing its daily workload lets it gradually slim, so the jawline looks softer from the front. It is not the right answer for every square-looking jaw. If the shape comes mainly from the bone structure, or from skin sagging or fat, the change that can be expected may be limited. That is why the doctor first feels the muscle while you clench your teeth, checks its thickness and symmetry, and then plans the dose and injection points.

The visit, step by step

After the assessment, injection points are mapped about 1.5–2 cm above the angle of the jaw, spread across the thickest area on each side and placed to avoid affecting your smile. The skin is wiped with alcohol and a measured dose is injected into the muscle with a fine needle. The sensation is usually a brief pinprick, and jaw Botox is typically done without separate anesthesia; if you are sensitive to pain, mention it to the doctor beforehand.

The whole process takes about 10 minutes. Toxin products differ in unit strength and characteristics, so the same dose does not necessarily give the same result in every product; the doctor and you decide the product at the consultation. After treatment and traveling home

Redness, swelling, stinging or bruising may appear at the injection sites and usually settle over time. As the masseter is used less, chewing may feel weaker or the jaw may tire easily for the first 1–2 weeks; avoiding tough, chewy food helps. Rarely, part of the muscle may bulge when tensed, which usually improves with time — contact us if it persists.

On the day of treatment, do not rub or massage the area, and for 3–4 days avoid saunas, hot baths, vigorous exercise and alcohol. Flying itself has no specific restriction. Results and how long they last vary between people and are not permanent; a repeat treatment is commonly planned roughly every 3–6 months.
